Literacy Objectives

1. *Using a map, find essential physical locations on a school campus, at a district office, etc.
3. Read and write school correspondence such as excusing an absence and field trip permission slips.
6 . *List children's names and birthdates.
7. *List the names of teachers, classroom numbers, and school name and phone number.

*Language and literacy objectives with an asterisk are suitable for beginning low level students

Assessment Type and Description

Oral, Written

Total Possible: 34    Pass:  BL - 13,  BH - 26,  Int L - 30

Task One

BL:

Student will locate 8 places on a school or agency map. When the assessor shows the student a picture of a location (e.g., the library), the student will locate it on the map and state the name (e.g., "library").

BH-IL:

Student will give directions on how to get from place to place on a school or agency map - 8 times. (e.g., How do I get to the office from the cafteria?)

Examples of places to locate:

  1. office
  2. classroom
  3. cafeteria/lunchroom
  4. restroom
  5. library
  6. nurse's or counselor's office
  7. playground
  8. bus stop
  9. student lounge
  10. computer learning lab
Scoring Rubric  
Each set of directions clearly and correctly given 2 points
Each set of directions given correctly with errors which do not interfere with meaning or each place correctly located and name stated. 1 point
Each direction incorrectly given or place incorrectly located and/or named 0 points
Task Two Student will write a note to school or agency regarding an absence. The not will include 7 pieces of information. Student will be evaluated on content, spelling, and grammar. (BL student will fill in an absence note form which lists the 7 pieces of information the student must fill in -e.g., date, name of student, etc. BL student will not be evaluated on spelling or grammar.)

Information may include:

  1. current date
  2. name of student
  3. name of teacher
  4. room number
  5. days and dates of absence
  6. reason for absence
  7. signature

Passing Scores:  Total Possible – 34 points

Beginning Low        13 points

Beginning High       26 points
