English as a Second Language (ESL)

ESL Registration Information

Classes:

Term 1:  September 12-February 16, 2012
Term 2:  February 21, 2012-June 28, 2012
Holidays (no classes):
   Jan. 16, Feb. 13, 20, April 2-12, May 28

Ongoing Registration: ESL Registration and Placement Office

Tuesdays and Wednesdays
   January 17- March 28
   9:00am-12:30pm and 6:30-8:30pm

Open enrollment is based on space available.
New students are assessed for their level of literacy and English proficiency
to ensure appropriate level placement.

There is no charge for ESL classes.

English as a Second Language
at Loma Vista Adult Center

Improve your conversation, grammar, reading, writing, listening, pronunciation, and vocabulary.  Learn to use English to get a job, advance at work, participate and communicate in the community.  All ESL classes have weekly access to a computer lab and are taught by highly-qualified and trained instructors.

ESL for Healthcare Workers    NEW!

Improve your speaking, listening, vocabulary, pronunciation, cultural understanding, and communication skills! (Intermediate High level or higher.) Class starts week of February 21.  Check website for details.

ESL Writing    NEW!

Improve your writing skills so that you can progress to the next step in achieving your goals! 
Wednesdays 6:30-9:15pm (Intermediate High level or higher).

English Self-Study at School   

Study on your own or in small groups to improve your English through: Listening, Reading, Writing, Grammar practice, TOEFL preparation, and more.  Register in class, Monday-Thursday 12:30-2:45pm (Intermediate High level or higher).

Distance Learning - English at Home/Citizenship Preparation

New programs added for Family Literacy and Advanced students!  Check out a video or DVD and receive a free workbook.  Watch and complete the lessons at home and then meet with a teacher to review your work and answer your questions.  $10 deposit collected at registration.  Cash only.

Citizenship

Citizenship Preparation

A 12-session course designed to help those who want to learn step-by-step how to apply for American citizenship.  Students will have an opportunity to develop and practice their English language skills specifically in preparation for the naturalization interview and learn to use technology to access current information.  Competency in English at the Intermediate Low II level required.  Please also see Distance Learning - Citizenship Preparation class above.  New classes start January 11 and April 4, 2012

ESL/Family Literacy

Improve your English skills so you can help your children succeed in school! Our classes are especially for parents and other adult community members who want to speak, read and write English better and learn how to help their children with schoolwork. Classes are ongoing through June 7, 2012 unless otherwise noted.  Students may enter when space is available.

School Readiness Classes
 

Provided by Mt. Diablo Unified School District, Adult Education Division, with funding from
First Five Contra Costa, Children and Families Commission.

Our School Readiness Program (preschool) is available for the 3 to 5 year old children of adults participating in ESL Family Literacy classes at the following sites:

  • Cambridge Elementary
  • Meadow Homes Elementary
