2002 Athlete of the Year Matt Owen has experienced tremendous success as a member of College Park's 2001 Diablo Foothill Athletic League and North Coast Section Champion Cross Country Team. He is also a Top Ten All-Time performer in six Track & Field events, including School Records for the Distance Medley Relay and Sprint Medley Relay, which he anchored in 4:23 (1600m) and 1:56 (800m) splits respectively. Matt began his Senior year as the top returning Cross Country athlete in the DFAL. Unfortunately, in the first week of the season, he suffered a devastating foot injury that sidelined him for an entire month. However, this did not deter him from pursuing his goal of a return trip to the State Championships, and league and section titles for his team. Matt took on the challenge of rehabilitation and followed through on his commitment by returning to competition. In his first race, Matt provided the difference against league leading and state ranked Campolindo and Acalanes. Then he willed his team to a dominating performance at the league championships, and provided the momentum that carried through to a North Coast Section victory in November. In the Spring Matt again overcame injury to assert himself as one of the sections premier performers in Track & Field. He was an area leader in both the 800m and 1600m, and climbed to 3rd All-Time with a 1:56.4ce two-lap effort in the NCS Meet of Champion finals. VITAL STATISTICS Cross
