Guidelines for Use of Leave Categories

Administrative Leave (authorized)

Authorized School Business

Use for time actually spent:

  • in disciplinary or grievance meetings;
  • at the bargaining table;
  • testifying at an arbitration;
  • for meetings or committee work required by the administration.

Bargaining Unit Business

Use for time off to:

  • prepare for negotiations;
  • prepare for grievance or disciplinary meetings;
  • distribute union materials, fliers, etc.

Attach approved Authorization for Absence in place of absence report/verification.

Bereavement

Used upon death of a family member (refer to the definition in the employee's bargaining unit contract).

  • Four days.
  • Five days if required to travel over 200 miles.
  • Ten days if required to travel outside continental U.S.

Court Appearance For appearance in court as a witness, not a litigant. Attach verification (not summons). Remit witness fee to district per Ed. Code 44036 (do not include mileage reimbursement).

(Only for Local 1 - both Clerical and Maintenance & Operations)

  • One day per year.
  • May not be taken in partial days.
  • May not be carried over to next year.

Use for:

  • Religious observance (maximum two days per year).
  • General short-term leave (prior approval by administrator required)

Charged against earned sick leave. Use for:

  • Death of a family member (if necessary in addition to bereavement leave). (Refer to the definition in the employee's bargaining unit contract.)
  • Accident involving person or property.
  • Serious illness of member of immediate family.
  • Appearance in court as a litigant.
  • Personal business that cannot be accomplished outside working hours.

Sick Leave Charged against earned sick leave. Use only for employee's illness or medical appointments.
