Social Studies Objectives:
By examining issues, events, and experiences of people within a historical context students will:
1. Increase their awareness of our multicultural society and interdependent world by recognizing the sanctity of life and the dignity of the individual.
2. Learn about the evolution of democratic rights and of guarantees for the individual against government tyranny or against oppression by the majority.
3. Increase their awareness of civic rights and the responsibilities of a good citizen in a democracy.
4. Learn to appreciate the pluralistic nature of American society.
5. Examine the role of law in our society as a safeguard for individual rights and freedoms.
6. The history-social science curriculum at Foothill Middle School will reflect the history-social science framework for California public schools, K-12 and the newly adopted California Standards.

English Language Arts Objectives:
The English-language arts curriculum will reflect the accepted California frameworks for California public schools and the newly adopted standards and benchmarks.
1. Use their verbal, analytical, critical and imaginative skills to understand oneself and our country.
2. Develop their reading and English writing skills.
3. Explore values as well as acquire facts.
4. Develop critical and interpretive thinking skills.
5. Become historically literate with a linear concept of time so they can begin to see themselves as a participant in the historical process.
6. Distinguish between the writing of history and fiction.
7. Examine controversial issues and seek reasonable evidence rather than biased accounts.
