BACKGROUND HISTORY
In 1985 several families within the Mt. Diablo Unified School District expressed interest in a home study program for elementary students. These dedicated parents strongly believed that the education of their children was their primary responsibility. The Mt. Diablo Unified School Board of Education gave approval for a pilot program of home study as a component of the Center for Independent Study. At that time, the program was known as the Home Study Program K-6. Marjorie DeWitt served as resource teacher for the families of the first twenty-five students. As a result of the program's popularity and a competent staff, the program has grown to one hundred fifty K-12 students. There are currently seven credentialed teacher advisors serving Horizons Home Study families.
PARENT COUNCIL
The Parent Council is a volunteer advisory group which provides a vehicle for communication between parents and administration. All parents of enrolled Horizons students are encouraged to attend parent council meetings and to actively participate in the discussion.
WORKSHOPS & EVENTS
Horizons Home Study presents a wide variety of workshops throughout the year. Workshops are presented by both advisors and parents for the program's parents and children. Workshop subject matter is developed from parent needs surveys. To view more information about program workshops, activities, and events click: EVENTS.
