The
Challenge School is
a public school for gifted and talented children K-8 which is located
within the boundaries of Cherry Creek School District 5, Denver,
Colorado. A map of the district boundaries may be obtained from the
Educational Services Center at (303) 773-1184. Admission to the school
is by application and enrollment is limited. The school requires all
students adhere to a high level of academic and behavior standards.
Parents must fulfill a requirement of at least 25 volunteer hours each
year per family. Parents must provide their own transportation. For

Seattle Public Schools has 2 programs for gifted children. One program
is for the top 5% and the other is for the top 1% (CSCY should have
contacts and a rather exhaustive listing of schools and programs).
ASSETS School
(One Ohana Nui Way, Honolulu,
HI 96818) serves gifted, dyslexic, and gifted-dyslexic learners,
provides intensive developmental instruction, academic remediation,
acceleration, and enrichment as well as integrated counseling
services. Affective and academic interventions are integrated through
the use of a highly developed, carefully implemented plan of behavior
management which aids students in developing competence and confidence
as well as the capacity to accept responsibility.
California State
University at Los Angeles has an early
entrance program for gifted children (generally between the ages of
12-15). The program provides full time university enrollment allowing
the qualified student to skip high school and enter directly into
college. To qualify, students must demonstrate ability through the
taking of the Washington Pre College Test (WPCT) and scoring at the
standard set for entrance in the
Early
Entrance Program (EEP). This is followed by a provisional summer
quarter enrollment, where students must further qualify based on
academic performance and individual analysis. They are then allowed
to be admitted to the university as full time students. Director

Phelps Center for
the Gifted, or the
WINGS
program (Working with the Individual
Needs of Gifted Students.) Students in the Springfield (Missouri) area
in grades 1-8 with IQs of over 140 attend WINGS one day a week for
special instruction, enrichment, and other activities.
Thomas Jefferson School
is an independent boarding and day school in St. Louis, MO for
talented students in grades 7-12 who seek a challenging education in
preparation for the best colleges in the world.

"Foothill College has had
since 1984 its 'Academically
Talented Youth Program' (ATYP), a summer program of
college-credit courses for gifted teens. The college also has many
courses available over Internet, including Elementary Algebra which is
specifically designed for gifted children who are ready to learn
algebra but do not have access to a course at their schools."

University of Denver,
The Center for Educational Services,
Youth Programs. "University for Youth provides enrichment
courses to elementary and middle school students, grades K-6, in the
Denver area. The program presents 85 seven-week courses in public
schools, 35 Saturday Seminar Courses at DU, and 40 summer courses on
campus. The program is in its sixteenth year.
The Rocky Mountain Talent Search
offers high ability students in grades 6-9 the opportunity to take the
SAT or ACT college entrance exams 'early' to assess their potential,
gain testing experience, and qualify for rigorous summer courses.
Similar opportunities are offered to 5-6 grade students who take the
challenging PLUS test. The DU Talent Search is part of a national
program and serves 3500 students in the seven rocky mountain states."
Makintosh Academy - Serving
gifted and talented students from pre-school to eighth grade. Located
on three acres in south Littleton, Mackintosh Academy stands as the
Rocky Mountain pioneer in gifted and talented education. Opened in
1977, the Academy was the first private school in Colorado to

Anderson Program
at PS 9 is an elementary school program for highly gifted
students. Students are admitted on the basis of Stanford Binet IQ

McKinley Senior High School
in Baton Rouge, Louisiana is the only school in the East Baton Rouge
Parish School System that offers gifted, talented, and traditional
programs.
Duke University's
Talent
Identification Program (TIP) (The web site features resources
for parents as well as students.) They conduct a talent search for
students beginning in 7th grade for their summer programs. Their
mission statement: "Building on a rich history dating back to 1980,

Quest Academy, in
Chicago, Illinois is "an accredited, independent day school for gifted

Stuyvesant
High School is a
specialized academic school in lower Manhattan. Around 28,000 children
take the test and only around 800 or so get students are accepted from
all boroughs. It is rated the second best public high school in all of
NY state and certainly number one in New York City. I feel it should
be listed on your page as a school for the gifted. Please visit the

Washington Gifted School
in Peoria, Illinois is a middle school program of the
Peoria Public School District, and, by a comprehensive testing
process, is open to the top 240 students in 5th through 8th grades in
Peoria Public Schools. The program includes an enriched math and
science curriculum, foreign languages, a strong emphasis on
environmental issues (including a week of field school in northern
Illinois for 8th graders), and excellent art and music programs. Over
80% of the student body participates in orchestra or band. Odyssey of
the Mind, while extracurricular, is very active at Washington, which
has sent teams to the World Finals every year for the past six years.
In addition to superior test scores and curriculum, Washington
students excel in other areas as well: in 98-99, both girls and boys
swept the City Track Meet and the girls were undefeated in the
softball season, also taking first in the City Softball Tournament.
