Virtual School for the Gifted "A place where like minds can meet regardless of age, gender and geography. Educational interaction was previously limited by the physical world. Technology has removed these barriers, allowing for the birth of the Virtual School for the Gifted.

West of the Mississippi River

The Challenge School is a public school for gifted and talented children K-8 which is located within the boundaries of Cherry Creek School District 5, Denver, Colorado. A map of the district boundaries may be obtained from the Educational Services Center at (303) 773-1184. Admission to the school is by application and enrollment is limited. The school requires all students adhere to a high level of academic and behavior standards. Parents must fulfill a requirement of at least 25 volunteer hours each year per family. Parents must provide their own transportation. For information about the admissions procedure, family volunteer requirements, curriculum details, dates for application deadlines, and kindergarten tuition, contact the school by phone, FAX or mail.

The director of the Early Entrance Program and the Halbert Robinson Center for the Study of Capable Youth (CSCY) at The University of Washington is Dr. Nancy Robinson. You can reach her at (206) 543-4160 or capable@u.washington.edu. The University of Washington admits ANYONE to any summer classes.
Seattle Public Schools has 2 programs for gifted children. One program is for the top 5% and the other is for the top 1% (CSCY should have contacts and a rather exhaustive listing of schools and programs).

ASSETS School (One Ohana Nui Way, Honolulu, HI 96818) serves gifted, dyslexic, and gifted-dyslexic learners, provides intensive developmental instruction, academic remediation, acceleration, and enrichment as well as integrated counseling services. Affective and academic interventions are integrated through the use of a highly developed, carefully implemented plan of behavior management which aids students in developing competence and confidence as well as the capacity to accept responsibility.

California State University at Los Angeles has an early entrance program for gifted children (generally between the ages of 12-15). The program provides full time university enrollment allowing the qualified student to skip high school and enter directly into college. To qualify, students must demonstrate ability through the taking of the Washington Pre College Test (WPCT) and scoring at the standard set for entrance in the Early Entrance Program (EEP). This is followed by a provisional summer quarter enrollment, where students must further qualify based on academic performance and individual analysis.  They are then allowed to be admitted to the university as full time students. Phelps Center for the Gifted, or the WINGS program (Working with the Individual Needs of Gifted Students.) Students in the Springfield (Missouri) area in grades 1-8 with IQs of over 140 attend WINGS one day a week for special instruction, enrichment, and other activities.

Thomas Jefferson School is an independent boarding and day school in St. Louis, MO for talented students in grades 7-12 who seek a challenging education in preparation for the best colleges in the world.

"Foothill College has had since 1984 its 'Academically Talented Youth Program' (ATYP), a summer program of college-credit courses for gifted teens. The college also has many courses available over Internet, including Elementary Algebra which is specifically designed for gifted children who are ready to learn algebra but do not have access to a course at their schools." Children's Programs for K-7 ages and Youth Programs for junior high and high school.

University of Denver, The Center for Educational Services, Youth Programs. "University for Youth provides enrichment courses to elementary and middle school students, grades K-6, in the Denver area. The program presents 85 seven-week courses in public schools, 35 Saturday Seminar Courses at DU, and 40 summer courses on campus. The program is in its sixteenth year. The Rocky Mountain Talent Search offers high ability students in grades 6-9 the opportunity to take the SAT or ACT college entrance exams 'early' to assess their potential, gain testing experience, and qualify for rigorous summer courses. Similar opportunities are offered to 5-6 grade students who take the challenging PLUS test. The DU Talent Search is part of a national program and serves 3500 students in the seven rocky mountain states."

Makintosh Academy - Serving gifted and talented students from pre-school to eighth grade. Located on three acres in south Littleton, Mackintosh Academy stands as the Rocky Mountain pioneer in gifted and talented education. Opened in 1977, the Academy was the first private school in Colorado to recognize the unique needs of our brightest students.

The Mirman School ". . . an environment where the gifted student is challenged mentally, supported emotionally, enriched academically and integrated socially to his or her greatest potential. Nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains above Los Angeles, California, it is an independent co-educational school designed to meet the needs of academically gifted children ages 5 to 14."

The Anderson Program at PS 9 is an elementary school program for highly gifted students. Students are admitted on the basis of Stanford Binet IQ scores, an onsite evaluation and teacher recommendation. An IQ score must be at least at the 97th percentile for consideration.

The Wisconsin Center for Gifted Learners develops and provides programs and guidance for gifted learners, their families, and teachers to support the social/cognitive and educational development of children who love to learn and whose exceptional intellectual abilities require special services.

The Center understands that gifted learners require like-level peer interaction in order to develop social skills, leadership abilities, and self-acceptance.

WCGL programs are based on an amalgamation of theory and research, and curriculum is designed by Center Staff to address the unique needs of gifted learners.

McKinley Senior High School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana is the only school in the East Baton Rouge Parish School System that offers gifted, talented, and traditional programs.

Duke University's Talent Identification Program (TIP) (The web site features resources for parents as well as students.) They conduct a talent search for students beginning in 7th grade for their summer programs. Their mission statement: "Building on a rich history dating back to 1980, Duke University's Talent Identification Program (TIP) is committed to identifying academically talented students and to providing model programs and services to support the development of their optimal educational potential. TIP is dedicated to being the national leader in offering innovative, high quality programs and services for academically talented children & youth and their parents, with the goals of better understanding and serving America's most academically talented students."

Quest Academy, in Chicago, Illinois is "an accredited, independent day school for gifted children serves 275 boys and girls, preschool through grade 8, of exceptional ability. The Academy's curriculum is based on a traditional liberal arts education with equal emphasis on the sciences, humanities and the arts. It has been specifically designed for gifted and talented children and reflects the most recent and highly regarded research on the needs of able learners. Crtitcal thinking and reasoning abilities, as well as character development, is taught and applied across content areas." North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics for gifted and talented high schoolers.

Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) is a residential high school for gifted students from all over the state of Illinois (it is located approximately 40 miles west of the city of Chicago in a residential area with access to major highways). Stuyvesant High School is a specialized academic school in lower Manhattan. Around 28,000 children take the test and only around 800 or so get students are accepted from all boroughs. It is rated the second best public high school in all of NY state and certainly number one in New York City. I feel it should be listed on your page as a school for the gifted. Please visit the website of the school which was created and is maintained by students.

Washington Gifted School in Peoria, Illinois is a middle school program of the Peoria Public School District, and, by a comprehensive testing process, is open to the top 240 students in 5th through 8th grades in Peoria Public Schools. The program includes an enriched math and science curriculum, foreign languages, a strong emphasis on environmental issues (including a week of field school in northern Illinois for 8th graders), and excellent art and music programs. Over 80% of the student body participates in orchestra or band. Odyssey of the Mind, while extracurricular, is very active at Washington, which has sent teams to the World Finals every year for the past six years. In addition to superior test scores and curriculum, Washington students excel in other areas as well: in 98-99, both girls and boys swept the City Track Meet and the girls were undefeated in the softball season, also taking first in the City Softball Tournament. The Indiana Academy for Science, Mathematics, and Humanities serves as a residential high school for approximately 300 gifted and talented juniors and seniors from across the state of Indiana. Through various Outreach programs, the Indiana Academy strives to stimulate and enable vitality in educational programs for academically gifted students and teachers. The Indiana Academy is located on the Ball State University campus and is accredited by the Indiana Department of Education and by the North Central Association of Schools and Colleges through the University Schools.

Academy Hill School a small private day school in Springfield, MA dedicated to the differentiated education of gifted children in grades K - 6.

Pine View School in Osprey, FL (Sarasota County), a full-time gifted school for grades 2-12.

Center for Talent Development at Northwestern University, serving gifted students for over fifteen years. Our programs include testing (Midwest Talent Search and Midwest Talent Search for Young Students), Saturday Enrichment Programs for PreK-9th graders, Summer Programs for 4th-12th graders, and correspondence courses for 6th-12th graders.

The Program for the Exceptionally Gifted (PEG) at Mary Baldwin College "The Program for the Exceptionally Gifted is a unique program offering young, academically talented women the opportunity to begin their college education one to four years early within a community of their peers. PEG students are challenged beyond the high school curriculum in a supportive environment that encourages personal growth. Qualified students may enter the program at any point after completing the eighth grade, although one year of the high school experience is frequently recommended."

Institute for the Academic Advancement of Youth (IAAY) of The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. "IAAY offers classes, testing, evaluation, publications, research on K-12 gifted and talented youth."

The Governor's School for Governmental and International Studies - "The Governor's School for Governmental and International Studies provides broad-based educational opportunities that develop students' understanding of world cultures and languages, as well as the ability to lead, participate, and contribute in a rapidly changing global society."

Washington Magnet and Gifted School of Communication is located in Rockford, Illinois, USA and serves 4th-6th grades.

"CLUE (Creative Learning in a Unique Environment) is a program designed to meet the needs of academically talented and intellectually gifted students within the Memphis (Tennessee) City Schools."

Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science, a public state-supported high school for intellectually gifted 11th and 12th graders located in Columbus, Mississippi.

"Choate Rosemary Hall is a coeducational boarding high school of 800 students from 44 states and 37 countries. The curriculum includes 250 courses with AP and honors available in each of our 8 departments. Over 50% of our graduates matriculate at one of Barron's Top 50 American Colleges and Universities." The Sage School in Foxboro, Massachusetts.

Mark Twain Intermediate School for the Gifted located in Brooklyn, New York.

The Gifted and Talented Enrichment Center presents The Creative Arts and Science Program Long Island School for the Gifted. They accept only IQ's of 130 or above. Huntington Station, Long Island NY.

Old Donation Center for the Gifted and Talented located in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Gifted and Talented Development Program at Queens College located in Charlotte, North Carolina. They have a great looking summer program, and they are also involved in Odyssey of the Mind program.

Chesapeake School's Gate Lab School "The Superintendent's School for the Academically Gifted and Talented. The school has a student body of approximately 500 fifth and sixth grade students who are bussed once a week from their home schools. There are 3 teams of 2 teachers, and each student spends 12 weeks during the year with each team."

"The Let Me Learn process helps learners of all ages identify their brain-based learning patterns and then utilize that information to be more effective students. It is based on the "Interactive Learning Model" (Christine Johnston, Unlocking the Will to Learn, Corwin Press) which emphasizes that the key to motivated learning rests in the interaction of all three faculties or brain activities - cognition, conation and affectation. We emphasize the importance of understand the "whole child" and helping them to take charge of their learning once they understand their learning skills."
 

"The Great Books Foundation Web site offers information about Junior Great Books materials and training opportunities. The Junior Great Books Curriculum is a challenging K-12 reading and discussion program which combines classic works of literature and the shared inquiry method of discussion and is widely used in gifted and talented programs. We use the shared inquiry method and Junior Great Books here at Millville School. I personally believe it is an excellent program to enhance students reading experience.
