This executive summary of the School Accountability Report Card (SARC) is intended to provide parents and community members with a quick snapshot of school accountability. About This School

Cambridge Elementary School (CES) is located in the neighborhood known as the “Monument Corridor” of central Concord, California. It is a culturally rich, low-income neighborhood. The school site shares the Cambridge Community Park with the City of Concord. The school serves approximately 700 students in grades K-5. The CES significant sub-group populations include: socio-economically disadvantaged (SD) students (94.5%), English Learners (79.5%), and Hispanic/Latino students (88.5%). The site also houses the Mt. Diablo Adult Education classrooms that provide English classes and family literacy support for adults. First Five services for pre-school-age children and their parents are also provided.

The teaching staff at CES is comprised of 32 classroom teachers, 7 specialists (reading, math, Special Education, and English Learner). Support for students, parents and teachers is provided by office staff, parent liaisons, paraprofessionals, and principal. The After School Program provides support for 235 students, 5 days per week.

The Cambridge school community recognizes the need to equip our students with the life skills and attitudes that will allow them to become responsible members of a competitive, cooperative, and culturally diverse society and to further a lifetime of academic and personal growth.

Summary of Most Recent Site Inspection

Site inspection revealed that the site enjoyed a generally high level of facility repair. No significant facility concerns were identified.

Repairs Needed

Minor drinking fountain, restroom fixture and lighting issues were identified but have since been remedied.

Corrective Actions Taken or Planned

During the summer of 2009 the site is scheduled for a comprehensive retrofit of all classroom and administrative areas. Kitchen flooring and ceiling replacement projects will also be completed. During the summer of 2008 the site underwent a comprehensive HVAC retrofit in all classroom and administrative areas.

IV. School Facilities

Facility Conditions and Planned Improvements (School Year 2008-09)

This section provides information about the condition of the school’s grounds, buildings, and restrooms, and a description of any planned or recently completed facility improvements.

The District takes great efforts to ensure that all schools are clean, safe, and functional. To assist in this effort, the District uses a facility survey instrument developed by the State of California Office of Public School Construction. The results of this survey are available through the Maintenance and Operations Department.

District maintenance staff ensures that the repairs necessary to keep the school in good repair and working order are completed in a timely manner. A work order process is used to ensure efficient service and that emergency repairs are given the highest priority.

Additionally, the District participates in the State School Deferred Maintenance Program, which provides State matching funds on a dollar-for-dollar basis, to assist school districts with expenditures for major repair or replacement of existing school building components. Typically, this includes roofing, plumbing, heating, air conditioning, electrical systems, interior or exterior painting, and floor systems.

Academic Performance Index

The Academic Performance Index (API) is an annual measure of the academic performance and progress of schools in California. API scores range from 200 to 1,000, with a statewide target of 800. Detailed information about the API can be found at the API Web page.
