About This School

The vision of Westwood Elementary School is to create and maintain a safe environment that ensures every member of the school community reaches their highest, individual level of academic achievement as determined by state and national standards. Site inspection revealed that the site enjoyed a satisfactory level of facility repair.

A minor water pressure problem as well as an office security concern was identified. All issues have been addressed and repaired.

Corrective Actions Taken or Planned

During the summer of 2007, the site underwent a comprehensive modernization and the construction of new classrooms.

School Description and Mission Statement (School Year 2007-08)

This section provides information about the school’s goals and programs.

All students are welcomed and viewed as unique individuals. Students are treated with respect and compassion and their special talents are nurtured and recognized. Universal standards for students are explained and enforced. High expectations for academics and behavior exist for all children. Children work hard and are responsible for their learning and behavior and put forth their best efforts daily. Students accept the differences in each other and are respectful toward other children and adults. They are prepared to be lifelong learners and creative problem solvers that compete in an ever changing and diverse world. It is our goal that students will be independent and productive citizens who can work cooperatively with others. Parents play an integral part in their child’s learning. They are viewed as a part of the teaching team in many ways, through active volunteering, through efforts uniting home and school, through supporting each child’s growth in learning, through being informed in the school’s activities and through participating in community events. Parents feel ownership in their child’s school. The community will see the school vision in the faces and spirits of the staff and students who are eager to attend school, express school pride and publicize the good things that are happening.

IV. School Facilities

Facility Conditions and Planned Improvements (School Year 2008-09)

This section provides information about the condition of the school’s grounds, buildings, and restrooms, and a description of any planned or recently completed facility improvements.

The District takes great efforts to ensure that all schools are clean, safe, and functional. To assist in this effort, the District uses a facility survey instrument developed by the State of California Office of Public School Construction. The results of this survey are available through the Maintenance and Operations Department.

District maintenance staff ensures that the repairs necessary to keep the school in good repair and working order are completed in a timely manner. A work order process is used to ensure efficient service and that emergency repairs are given the highest priority.

Additionally, the District participates in the State School Deferred Maintenance Program, which provides State matching funds on a dollar-for-dollar basis, to assist school districts with expenditures for major repair or replacement of existing school building components. Typically, this includes roofing, plumbing, heating, air conditioning, electrical systems, interior or exterior painting, and floor systems.

Academic Performance Index

The Academic Performance Index (API) is an annual measure of the academic performance and progress of schools in California. API scores range from 200 to 1,000, with a statewide target of 800. Detailed information about the API can be found at the API Web page.

XI. Instructional Planning and Scheduling

Professional Development

This section provides information on the annual number of school days dedicated to staff development for the most recent three-year period.

The district coordinates a varied staff development programs for teachers and administrators based on assessed needs and state mandates. Two days prior to school and one buy-back day during the school year are dedicated to staff development. The past two years the staff has participated in buy-back days during the school year. The following topics have been presented:
