Valley View Middle School provides opportunities for all students to explore a wide variety of subjects and activities that promotes interest in lifelong learning and preparation for continued education. Valley View Middle School stresses the development of a sense of personal worth and mutual respect for all students, staff, and community.

Opportunities for Parental Involvement (School Year 2007-08)

This section provides information about opportunities for parents to become involved with school activities.

Many opportunities exist for parents to be involved in Valley View. We have an active PTSA that meets on a monthly basis and coordinates many programs on campus where we need parents’ help. These opportunities include, but are not limited to:

• Workers at registration and orientation
• Chaperones for school dances
• Coordinators, workers and donators for Honors Dessert, the Reflections Program, 8^th grade promotion activities, Teachers Appreciation events, Founder’s Day Celebration, and other campus celebrations
• Coordinators for fund-raising activities Volunteers for the library, health office and school site improvement projects
• Volunteers for the library, health office and school site improvement projects

In addition, parents are asked to volunteer their time patrolling our campus during school hours in our Parent Patrol Program. Sign ups are taken at registration before school starts and throughout the school year by calling the office.

Teachers request parent involvement throughout the school year for classroom activities and assistance in driving and chaperoning field trips. Notice is given to the parents as each activity surfaces.

Parents are also needed to serve on committees that strive to improve Valley View. These committees include School Site Council, the Emergency Preparedness Committee, and the Safety Committee. Willingness to serve on these committees is indicated on a volunteer list solicited at registration time. PTSA members and Valley View staff may also solicit volunteers.

IV. School Facilities

Facility Conditions and Planned Improvements (School Year 2008-09)

This section provides information about the condition of the school’s grounds, buildings, and restrooms, and a description of any planned or recently completed facility improvements.

The District takes great efforts to ensure that all schools are clean, safe, and functional. To assist in this effort, the District uses a facility survey instrument developed by the State of California Office of Public School Construction. The results of this survey are available through the Maintenance and Operations Department.

District maintenance staff ensures that the repairs necessary to keep the school in good repair and working order are completed in a timely manner. A work order process is used to ensure efficient service and that emergency repairs are given the highest priority.

Additionally, the District participates in the State School Deferred Maintenance Program, which provides State matching funds on a dollar-for-dollar basis, to assist school districts with expenditures for major repair or replacement of existing school building components. Typically, this includes roofing, plumbing, heating, air conditioning, electrical systems, interior or exterior painting, and floor systems.

Schools and districts receiving federal Title I funding enter Program Improvement (PI) if they do not make AYP for two consecutive years in the same content area (English-language arts or mathematics) or on the same indicator (API or graduation rate). After entering PI, schools and districts advance to the next level of intervention with each additional year that they do not make AYP. XI. Instructional Planning and Scheduling

Professional Development

This section provides information on the annual number of school days dedicated to staff development for the most recent three-year period.

The district coordinates a varied staff development program for teachers and administrators based on assessed needs and state mandates. Two days prior to school and staff development minimum days during the school year are dedicated to professional development.

Valley View uses its staff development to educate teachers on a variety of topics. In the past four years, topics that were explored include: Discipline, Behavior Modification, Standards, and Technology. In addition, there are monthly Faculty Meetings that include a 20-30 minute component on staff development. Approximately 20% of the SIP funds were used to pay for opportunities for staff to attend conferences and workshops. Valley View is recognized by the state (CalSTAT) for their efforts in collaboration for regular and special education students. Valley View offers technical support for other schools in our district and in the state that are developing collaborative programs. Several staff have presented at the California League for Middle Schools (CLMS) and our 8^th grade English/Social Studies teachers are part of the UC Berkeley History Project.
