Serendipity is a HERO (Home Economics Related Occupations) - an ROP Tech Prep Career Pathway and has been a part of Mt. Diablo Unified School District for more than 25 years. Located on the campus of Mt. Diablo High School, the restaurant and bakery are open to the public three days each week for lunches, pastries and special catering events. Started as part of the Home Economics Department, it’s goal was to provide students an opportunity to learn culinary arts using a full kitchen and baking facility. The facility includes a full commercial kitchen, bakery/pastry shop, computer research lab and a dining room with a seating capacity of 125. As a school –based enterprise, Serendipity is student operated with the curriculum aligned to the California Home Economics Careers and Technology Challenge Standards. Certificates of Mastery are awarded is presently operating three days each week. The restaurant seats 125 persons, who are served by the students. The name Serendipity was researched and the following was discovered: Serendipity means - “A Nice Surprise in an Unexpected Place”. Happenstance The Contra Costa County Regional Occupation Program (ROP) joined the program to provide additional support in the area of additional curriculum, supplies, and equipment improvement. In 1995, the Serendipity team of teachers, business advisors, along with school and district administrators met to establish a “small learning community” under the State Department of Education—High School Initiatives Office—as a California Partnership Academy. In 1996, the International Hospitality and Tourism Academy began as a joint venture with Serendipity. Catering and Community Service: The business has grown considerably, where the team of Restaurant and Academy provide catering services to numerous groups throughout Contra Costa County. The following organizations are served the Serendipity: · Mt. Diablo Unified School · Concord Chamber of Commerce · Chevron · Contra Costa County Office of Education Serendipity Restaurant and Bakery is a member of the following organizations: · Concord Chamber of Commerce. An Advisory Board contributes technical expertise, internships and curriculum support to students and staff. As a result, many students become mentors, conducting workshops for students and other teachers throughout California. FHA-HERO, our national leadership organization, offers competitive recognition events, scholarships and leadership opportunities on regional, state and national levels. |
