Mr. Tellian's Class Policy/Syllabus

Northgate Science Department Syllabus

Welcome to the Northgate Science Department. This class is a one-year course on the "study of life". This class will cover topics related to general scientific problem solving, evolution, biochemistry, DNA and genetics, species classification, photosynthesis, ecology, and human biology

Here are some guidelines that will help you make this a successful year for you in class:

Textbook: You will be issued a text book, Modern Biology, at the beginning of the year. you will be responsible for keeping your book in excellent condition; therefore, a cover is required. Do not lose or damage your books. You will be charged with a fee for a damaged or lost book as disclosed. See: Textbook Charges for Science Books. Both you and your parents must sign and return this agreement to Northgate High School.

Lab Donations: In order to support your learning effort, the Northgate High School Department asks each student to donate $15. This donation will be used to purchase lab supplies that each student will use throughout the year. Lab donations are due on September 21st. A receipt will be provided.

Notebooks: Each student will need a three-ring binder at least 1 inch thick with section dividers (5). The sections will be divided as follows:

  • Classroom notes and handouts,

  • lab,

  • homework,

  • tests/quizzes, and

  • lined paper

Make sure you have lined paper in your notebook at all times You will turn your notebook in for a grade and I will not accept a notebook with papers falling out of it. I also suggest you purchase a set of colored pencils for the class. BRING YOUR NOTEBOOK TO CLASS EVERY DAY

Homework: Homework assignments are due the day specified. If you turn in your homework one day late, half the credit will be automatically deducted from your score. No work will be accepted after one day. Work which is missed due to an absence may be made up if the absence is legal. No work, may be made up if you are truant. IF YOU ARE ABSENT, SEE THE CLASS BINDER TO DETERMINE THE SUBJECT DISCUSSED AND THE HOMEWORK ASSIGNED FOR THE DAY(S) YOU WERE ABSENT. DO NOT ASK ME, "DID WE DO ANYTHING IMPORTANT WHILE I WAS GONE?"

Grades: You earn your own grade, I only report it. Your grade is based upon the number of points you have earned on tests, labs, homework, and special assignments divided by the total number of points to give you a percentage.

Classroom Management:

  1. When the bell rings, be seated and ready to begin class. Do not be late. The tardy and truancy policy at Northgate High School will be enforced. AFTER 3 TARDIES PER QUARTER, I SUBTRACT POINTS.

  2. No eating/drinking/chewing in the classroom.

  3. Respect your peers and me by not talking, throwing things, or getting out of your desk without my permission. Disrespect will result in a subtraction of points.

  4. Do not expect to use the bathroom during class unless you have a medical condition (emergency).

  5. Sit in your assigned seat and work with your assigned lab partners only.
