The School Site Council (SSC) is a major part of the overall decision-making structure at every public school. They are a group of people who are elected by their peers to represent the members of our school community.
Their primary role is to guide the site planning process to ensure that the needs of all students are specifically addressed in the Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA). The SPSA is a living document that highlights the goals for the school and the programs and dollars that the school needs to turn these goals into a reality for students. The SSC establishes the budget, regularly reviews its implementation, and assesses its effectiveness. In addition to the SPSA, the SSC addresses issues raised by parents and staff such as safety, resources, student achievement, and student conduct. The SSC also reviews staff reports on curricular and extracurricular activities and parent reports on community activities and sentiments.
The SSC is comprised of five elected parent representatives who serve two-year terms, three teachers, one classified school employee, and the principal. District training is provided for all new members.
SSC meetings are open to the public and normally held after school on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. Agendas are posted in the office and will be available online prior to the meeting. Minutes will also be posted.
Site Councils are based on three principles:
• Individuals closest to students should be more involved in making significant decisions affecting the instructional program of the school
• Plans to improve education at the school level receive more support when people understand and/or help to create them
• When families participate in their children’s education. including decision-making, their children and the school are more successful.
