Mrs. Lucich's
Fifth Grade Class

May 17, 2013 Message
Dear Parents:
Wednesday was so much fun! Thomas G. was my Teacher for a Day, having snagged that position through the Silent Auction. Mr. Glafkides was terrific! He did such a great job that I know whom to call on if I feel the need to sit back and relax. After all his hard work, Thomas joined Mrs. Hewgley, the 4th Grade teachers, their Teachers for a Day, and me for Pizza at DeVino’s followed by a Slurpee from 7 Eleven. Thanks for a job well done, Thomas!
Earlier this week, I sent home the results of the latest Math Test and Social Studies Test. If you did not receive them, let me know so I can tell you what your child received.
As we continue our gallop towards the end of the year, the next thing up for us will be the last round of Benchmark Exams. The Benchmarks will be given next week and the following week.
Please remember that donations for the Promotion and Promotion Party as well Gift/Gift Card Donations are still being happily accepted.
Two important dates are coming up: Wednesday, May 22, is Open House. Open House is from 7:00-8:00 P.M. with the Annual Ice Cream Social right before that from 6:30-7:00 P.M. Thursday, June 6, will be our One Night Only presentation of the 5th Grade Musical – The 13 Colonies. By now, everyone should have their lines and songs memorized. If your child is in my play group, I have handed out whatever props or costumes I have on hand. The exception is for hats. We will be making hats for boys and girls in class, if they need them.
Enjoy your weekend,
Caren Lucich

Public Speaking Instructions
Public speaking is beginning! Students will participate in Public Speaking once a month. Each student will speak for 1 -3 minutes. If additional time is needed, please talk to me about this ahead of time to see if the time is available. There is a chart in the classroom that will display the assigned topic and the week each student will have a turn. I will also post the dates, types of presentations, and groups responsible on our class web site for your reference.
Week 1 - Report on a history topic. Research a history topic and give a summary speech sequencing ideas logically and using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details to support main ideas. Provide a visual support, for example a poster, diagram, or a computer presentation.
Week 2 -Opinion speech. Plan and deliver an opinion speech that states an opinion, logically sequences evidence to support the position, uses transition words to effectively link opinions and evidence (e.g., consequently and therefore), and provides a concluding statement related to the speaker’s position. Provide a visual support that shows your main idea and key points.
Week 3 - Report on a science topic. Research a science topic and give a summary speech sequencing ideas logically and using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details to support main ideas. Provide a visual support such as a poster, diagram, media presentation, or hands on activity.
Week 4 - Recite a poem or speech. Students will need to memorize and recite a poem or section of a speech or historical document using rate, expression, and gestures appropriate to the selection. The selection should be pre-approved by Mrs. Lucich to insure it is an appropriate length.
Preparation -
-
Plan what you will say and write it on 3 x 5 index cards. Make your notes brief. You don’t need to write full sentences.
-
Practice what you want to say in front of a mirror at least 10 times! You don’t want to read your speech. You want to make it sound natural, like you’re just talking to us.
-
Look at your listeners as you speak. Speak loudly and clearly. Keep any objects you use below your face so your words aren’t muffled. Stand up tall, don’t sway, lean, or wiggle. Practice all this in front of a mirror or for someone at home.
Students will be graded on both the content of your presentation and the manner in which you present it to the class.
