Principal's Message...
Half the school year is behind us and we are quickly approaching the spring sprint. Teachers are busy covering all the standards required for the grade they teach and they are working hard with each child on mastery of those standards.
Before we know it the state-wide standardized test will be here. All students in grades 2-5 are expected to take this test. Our STAR (Standardized Testing and Reporting) testing window is April 28 May 14. As part of the STAR testing, students will be taking the CST (California Standards Test). In addition, 3rd grade students will take the CAT 6, an achievement test and 5th grade students take the CST in science. Although teachers have been working throughout the year to prepare their students for the STAR test, we will be increasing our efforts to prepare them from now through April. Test preparation consists of test taking skills and practice, and sample items that will be given as lessons to help prepare your child. The results are not expected back until August 2010.
I want to take a moment to thank you, the parents, for all that you do to work with your child and prepare them for school each day. We cannot express our appreciation enough. We could not effectively teach your child without you and your support. So, thank you for checking their homework each night even if you might not always understand it, helping them with special projects, responding to us when we need your assistance, getting them to bed on time and up and out of the house on time each morning in full uniform, and supporting school-wide efforts by volunteering. You are, in large part, why YVE is such a wonderful school.
Please make every effort not to be late or miss school over the next several months. Regular attendance is vital to the success of your child’s achievement! Also, please remember to send your child in the school uniform each and everyday, unless we have a waiver on file in the office. The uniforms have helped us further develop as a school focused on learning.
Warmest regards,

Christine Richardson
Principal

| Heard in the Office...
Office to parent: “Why is your child late today?” Parent: “He didn’t wake me up on time.”
Office to child: “Why are you late today?” Child: “I was taking a bubble bath.”
Parent to Office: “My child will be out three days.” Office: “The reason for the absence?” Parent: “Do you want the truth?”
Office to child: "Why are you so very late today? It’s after 10 a.m.” Child: “I went to bed at midnight.” Office: “Why, were you sick?” Child: “No, we went to the show.”
These exchanges are often humorous, and children (or parents) say these things with a straight face. However, we want you to think. What are you teaching your son or daughter when you take them on a school night to a show until midnight? What are you teaching your child when you bring him to school consistently tardy?
We understand that things do occur and car keys are misplaced, and the sister stayed too long in bed, and the relatives came to visit; nevertheless, when they consistently happen to you and your family, perhaps you need to get better organized and give school the top priority it should have.
It’s your sons or daughters who have to ask for a tardy slip; they who have missed the Pledge and the daily announcements; they who walk into class after the teacher has begun instruction; they who feel lost because they have missed the start of the school day.
We know you want the very best for your children. Studies show that children need structure as much as they need food.

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION
"Every Box Top Counts"
All YVE teachers have a special bag for your child to turn in box tops. If your teacher doesn't participate, you can still help our school. There is a box top box on the front desk of the office. You can drop off your box tops anytime during school hours.
Thanks to everyone for taking the time to raise money for our school.
