Where do we go from here? Formal Board Organization!
Ygnacio Valley High School will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2012! Let our campus improvements be the highlight for that celebration so that we can welcome alumni back in style! The date gives us a goal, and a wonderful opportunity to involve alumni, businesses and service groups in our continued transformation.
A formal Ygnacio Valley Community Action Group leadership board is being formed to comprise parents, YVHS staff and members of the community as well as student representatives from each class. If you would like to serve for a one-year term to ensure ongoing success of the YV Community Action Group, please contact me for more information.

Continued focus on developing a comprehensive landscaping plan for our campus remains a high priority. Early in 2007, we met with a group representing administrators, parents, alumni and students to talk about the importance of improved landscaping, seating, tables and shade in making the campus a more comfortable and inviting place for students, teachers and the visiting public. Additional follow up meeting will be scheduled over the summer 2009.
Community and corporate partnerships are an increasingly important way to achieve these goals as state funding to our schools is reduced and our district budget is compromised. Despite the funding gap, the physical appearance of our campus and its functionality for student safety and comfort are high priorities. Relationships and pride are built when people get involved and work together for to improve our surroundings, and the students and staff of our school community benefit from knowing that the larger community cares about our wellbeing and success.
What we need NOW: GARBAGE CANS! 32 gallon (grey or black) heavy duty rubber cans! Let’s keep the trash off the ground! If you would like to donate, please contact Teresa Torbett.
If you would like to contribute to our fundraising efforts to support our school improvement projects, please make your tax-deductible donation toYgnacio Valley High School and indicate on your check “YVHS Community Action Group.”

members of our community to make an immediate tax-deductible donation to our school district to support students and programs in lieu of the failed $99 Measure D parcel tax.
This week's show highlights the important role of community involvement as state budget cuts continue to threaten necessary services and programs. Fellow guests include San Jose City Councilwoman, Nora Campos, and Kathleen Kelly, Board President/Co-Founder of Spark San Francisco. The program will air Sunday morning, June 7 at 10AM on ABC7. Make a symbolic gesture of support for our school district and make your donation before the last day of school, June 10!
| What You Can Do To Help--- (click here)
Even though Measure D did not pass, you can still help to provide a stable source of funding for our local schools. Consider making a tax-deductible donation in the amount of $99 (which you would have paid on your annual county tax bill) directly to the Mt. Diablo Unified School District. During this economic turmoil, working together will ensure success in our endeavor to provide quality education in all of our schools.
Checks can be mailed or delivered to the Fiscal Services Department at the District Office, 1936 Carlotta Drive, Concord, CA 94519. Receipts will be mailed to the address on the check, or provided at the Fiscal Services Office for donations that are brought in person.

See YV’s Community Garden Grow!
The garden is growing with the active support of student, staff, parent and community volunteers who have been grading the area, constructing garden beds and planting vegetables in recent weeks. Tomatoes, peppers, onions and squash are just a few of the tasty treats that have made their way into the ground.
Thank you to everyone who has helped so far and very special thanks Color Spot for their donation of beautiful annuals which have been planted as colorful borders for the garden beds and to Sterling Albert Winery for the donation of wine French barrels which will be cut into containers.
Future development goals include collaboration with the YVHS art department to paint a garden-themed mural on the windows of the adjacent Physics classroom and affix artistic ceramic tiles to the exterior surround of the garden beds. Additional plans include possible construction of a brick patio with seating, and creation of a permanent sign identifying the garden— and that’s just the beginning! Be sure to look for news about the garden under Clubs and Organizations!
If you would like to be involved with the garden development, make donations of plant material or garden supplies such as mulch or are available to help do light maintenance (staking/weeding) over the summer break, please contact the Garden Coordinator, Kevin W. Edwards, Student Services Coordinator, YVHS 925-685-8414 x3602.

The Ygnacio Valley Community Action Group... ...has been putting the spotlight on the need for improved campus curb appeal at Ygnacio Valley High School since the spring of 2007.
| We have successfully coordinated hundreds of volunteers from our school community, businesses and service groups for clean up and improvement projects. Our activities are year-round, taking place throughout the school year and during summer vacation. We are grateful to the Mt. Diablo Unified School District's maintenance and operations department for their support in making much needed capital improvements to the campus. Community partners Continental Little League and Catholic Youth Organizations (CYO) Track and Field League have also been instrumental in improving our campus athletic programs. We are especially appreciative for volunteer help and resources from our partnerships with Citi, Comcast and Concord Disposal. Campus murals have been coordinated by the school art department and painted by students. The accompanying slideshow highlights some "before and after" images of our campus, and shows that there is still much to be done to move forward in developing a comprehensive landscaping plan. Our volunteer activities create a stronger sense of community-- our work parties have been fun and inspiring, and students always receive credit for their volunteer service hours. |
The improvements promoted by the YV Community Action Group bring our campus to its full potential, build school pride and create a positive and welcoming environment for all. We continue to look for corporate, service group and alumni partners to help fund and support improvements for the areas between the classroom wings, the main Quad, and outlying areas. There is particular interest in incorporating tree
planting for shade as well as installation of tables and seating for students.
Please contact the YVHS School Office or Teresa Torbett 925-680-8891 to get involved-- Enjoy the show! |

Marquee is Up and Running!
The lighting and dedication ceremony for our new marquee took place after school on April 20-- just in time to welcome students back from the spring break vacation. Special guests included Mt. Diablo Unified School Board members, Paul Strange and Linda Mayo; Interim Superintendent, Dick Nicoll; and Maintenance and Operations Program Manager, Jeff McDaniel, who was instrumental in coordinating the marquee project. Also in attendence were Sean McPeak of McPeak Electric, Inc. and Stuart Watson of Kel-Tec Builders, Inc. who helped get the sign installed and electrified.
The school driveway was blocked off to traffic for the event and the YVHS Marching Band played at the corner to start the festivities. YVHS Principal Carolyn Plath spoke of the impact that the new sign will have in illuminating for the public the wide variety of exciting activities that occur on our campus. Ygnacio Valley Community Action Group founder, Teresa Torbett, helped work with Mt. Diablo Unified School district officials to bring this project to fruition and also coordinated the ribbon cutting ceremony. Members of the PTSA (Parent Teacher Student Association), students, parents, alumni, neighbors joined in the festivities which also included cake and ice tea.

YVHS Marquee Installation
Our new electronic marquee was finally installed in the school driveway bright and early on Tuesday morning with the help of a massive construction crane. Stuart Watson and his construction crew rom Kel-Tec Builders, Inc. positioned the marquee into place while Carolyn Plath, YVHS Principal; Jeff McDaniel, Facilities and Operations Program Manager from the MDUSD Maintenance and Operations department, and Teresa Torbett, founder of the YV Community Action Group looked on. Pedestrians gathered at the corner and commuters slowed through the intersection to watch as the 1,000 pound marquee box was lifted from the wood packing crate, swung over the siren tower and light pole at the corner and gentle maneuvered onto the support posts.
While we are thrilled to have gotten this far--- we are STILL waiting on electrical hookup from Pacific, Gas and Electric to get the marquee operational. As soon as we have a confirmed construction date from them, we’ll be announcing the date of our dedication celebration. Stay tuned!

Ground-breaking construction begun for the much-awaited new ELECTRONIC MARQUEE!
The Ygnacio Valley High School entrance on Oak Grove Road got the first phase of a major makeover last weekend. Taking advantage of the school holiday, construction crews from Kel-Tec Builders, Inc. arrived early Monday morning and removed the old, broken and vandalized YVHS marquee.
Incoming school traffic was blocked for several hours while workers used heavy equipment to break up and remove the decorative rock base and old marquee and trench across the school driveway to access power at the corner. We are now awaiting completion of PG&E electrical work before installation of the new electronic marquee can take place in the next two weeks.
The marquee served Ygnacio Valley High School since the 1970's, and general deterioration, vandalism and graffiti tagging has been an increasing problem in recent years.
Broken letter tracks finally rendered the sign unusable last September. Since that time, all school, music and sports announcements to the community have been made using hand-painted posters taped onto the marquee frame.
The dream of installing a modern marquee was started by YVHS Leadership students in 2005, carried forward with help from Nancy Butterfield (YVHS parent, Class of 2008) in 2006 and was halted shortly thereafter when logistical considerations at the corner, necessity for state architectural permits, and exorbitant cost estimates for electrical power made the project seemingly unfeasible.
Efforts were resumed with the founding of the Ygnacio Valley Community Action Group in 2007, and installation of a new marquee became the key curb appeal issue in improving community perception of our school. Funding for the new electronic marquee was provided by the YVHS PTSA, Athletic and Music Boosters, individuals, businesses, and district funding.
Mt. Diablo Unified School District support and special assistance from the PG & E Public Affairs Office for Oakland/Contra Costa County were instrumental in making this dream a reality. The entire YVHS community is excited and grateful to see the completion of this much anticipated, high-visibility school improvement project.
It is important to note that since the YVHS campus is hidden from public view beyond the school driveway, the school marquee is the only physical representation of our high school campus and student body on a busy city thoroughfare.
Installation of the updated marquee on Oak Grove Road will immediately create a more positive campus image and appropriately reflect the successes and achievements of our students and staff. We hope that the entire community will enjoy the improved appearance of our school entrance, and will help protect the new marquee for future generations of students.

It takes just 7 seconds to make a first impression! We know that “curb appeal” refers to the attractive & welcoming appearance of a house from the street and directly affects its property value-- but did you know that having great curb appeal is equally important for our schools? First (and oftentimes lasting) impressions of people, places and situations are formed within just 7 seconds! Small changes can have big impact on the way people feel about a place— and our intention is to have fun, make new friends and change our little corner of the world for the better— one improvement at a time!
Every member of the Ygnacio Valley High School community deserves to have a great impression of their school.
We're not just picking up garbage... we're lifting up a school!

Landscaping Day at YVHS In Association with Comcast
Comcast and hundreds of YVHS volunteers complete tree planting and other major campus improvements while having a great time on Comcast Cares Day
We are so excited that YVHS was chosen as a site for the May 3, 2008 Worldwide Comcast Cares Day! Coordination with the YV Community Action Group and planning for this event started last fall, and culminated in hundreds of enthusiastic YVHS volunteers representing students, teachers, administrators, parents and members of the community planting trees along the front of our school, adding crushed rock to the parking lot medians to eliminate mud during the rainy season and removing ivy from the campus driveway to prepare for updated planting. Landscape architect, Frank Kluber, supervised the tree selection and planting, choosing three different species of flowering (non-fruiting) pear trees to create a dramatic and unified theme for the entrance to our school. Eleven flowering pear "New Bradford" were planted along the grass in front of the 200 Wing, eight flowering pear "Capitol" were planted in the rectangular driveway median in front of the 200 Wing and six flowering pear "Autumn Blaze" appear in the curved median adjacent to the handicap parking spaces. In addition to the flowering pear trees that were planted on Saturday, five additional redwood trees "Aptos" were purchased and will be planted on campus on a later date. According to Comcast officials, of their past five school improvement projects, YVHS had by far the largest number of volunteers come out to help. The trees and rock, as well as the expertise, materials, tools, heavy equipment and food, were all provided by Comcast, but YV supplied the excitement and the muscle power!
As if our three major projects weren't enough to tackle, volunteers also worked in teams to pick up garbage and recyclable beverage containers from all corners of our 55-acre campus, remove juniper bushes from the front of the MU, and clean wing hallways, classrooms and even storage closets throughout the day! In addition to the work outlined by Comcast and the YV Community Action Group, continued progress was made in grading the new Community Garden to prep for placing raised planters, and we are especially grateful to Concord Disposal for once again coming to our aid in providing complimentary containers to dispose of the recyclable green waste! It was quite a day-- Everyone worked hard, we had a lot of fun, and we are all very proud of the end result!
Thank you so much, Comcast! YVHS parent and Comcast volunteer, Danny Bratcher, led a very talented team of Comcast professionals, many of whom are YVHS parents and alumni, and under their guidance made our projects run smoothly. We are so grateful to Comcast for their major investment in our school. Everyone enjoyed the complimentary breakfast and lunch and we had a wonderful time. Be sure to view the photos, look for a story in the Contra Costa Times... and take the opportunity to visit YVHS and check out all the changes for yourself. You won't believe the difference -- and to think that such a complete transformation took place in only seven hours!

YVHS Community Garden Clean Up
Sunday, January 20
It started with CitiGroup, moved forward as Plan "B"-- and finished today! In the end, it took just two months and three separate clean up days to completely clear the area in front of the 100 Wing for the new YVHS Community Garden. It's amazing what you can accomplish with a desire, a commitment and a little teamwork!
YV students, parents and local Boy Scouts from Troop 380 showed their Warrior Pride today cutting back the remaining bushes, pulling stumps and carrying everything away to the big yellow recycling container provided by Concord Disposal. We had another great time working together, and made tremendous progress in a relatively short time.
Mr. Kevin Edwards, Student Services Coordinator, is putting together the next phase of the garden project... regrading the area, removing the larger stumps, and preparing the site for the installation of raised planting beds. Look for his update soon! Thank you again to everyone who came out to help-- and thank you, especially, to the students who extended the clean up and picked up trash from parking lot, tennis court and quad.

Fencing Update… Nearly Complete!
After much anticipation, the tennis court poles have been treated for rust
protection and painted, and the new fencing has finally gone up! Finishing
touches and the installation of new wind screening will happen in the next
few days-- just in time for our first home tennis matches-- and everything
is looking GREAT! Thank you, MDUSD!
Fencing Update… Halfway There!
If you’ve been by the school lately, you may have noticed that something is missing--- The old, dilapidated tennis court fencing with its broken slats and old dead vines! We are excited to report that the repairs are in process. The old fences came down about a week ago, and we expect to see a whole new look in the days ahead. Progress! You may also notice that new fencing with privacy slats has been added to the storage area between the art studios and metal shops. Stay tuned for updates as they happen!
Upcoming CLEAN UP DAYS… Sprucing up the Back!
Recent Campus Clean Up days have focused on removing trash and chewing gum, clearing debris from the school driveway and most recently, cutting, clearing and hauling brush from the front of the 100 Wing in preparation for placing raised planting beds for the new YVHS Community Garden. Our clean up events have been very well attended by students, administrators, teachers, parents and members of the community, and we would especially like to thank Concord Disposal for their help in hauling away several cubic yards of green waste. In response to numerous student requests, we are providing another work day this Sunday, January 20 in the Community Garden from 9 – 1 and a major effort is being coordinated to clean up the area near the playing fields at the back of the school along the campus fence line visible from the bike trail—but we need YOUR help! Join us again on Sunday, February 10 from 9-1.
Finally, this spring we are partnering with Comcast Cable to give the front of the school a much needed makeover as part of Comcast Cares Day in May, and we are working with Frank Kluber, landscape architect to develop a design plan with input from the YVHS community. Comcast has committed to investing a significant amount of money and energy towards improving the YVHS campus and we invite students, parents and other interested members the community to submit design ideas for the front of the school, or any other area on campus, by Friday, February 29. Bring them by the office! Google “YVHS” and click on “Warrior Pride” for updated information.
We continue to ask that all YV students and visitors leave the campus cleaner than they found it and do their part of help reduce vandalism on campus. Be a champion for change and talk to others about caring for YVHS campus facilities and getting involved. Your suggestions for improvement are always welcome. Please join us as we improve the campus for everyone— and student service hours are always awarded!
We’re Several Steps Closer to a New Marquee!—See it this Spring!
With regards to the new electronic marquee, Mt. Diablo School Board President and YVHS alumni, Gary Eberhard has been instrumental in moving the bureaucratic process forward to overcome obstacles to accessing electricity necessary for installation at the corner of Oak Grove Road. We anticipate that a new electronic marquee will be installed before the end of the school year; however, to discourage ongoing vandalism and damage that has made the current marquee nearly unusable, we would like to raise the height of the new marquee, which will require special permitting from the state at an additional cost. We are still raising the funds needed to complete this important project, so please make your personal or business donation today!— Make your checks payable to YVHS and put “Marquee” in the memo line!
"Plan B" Clean Up Day saw more YV Warriors Working to Make a
Difference!
Although we were not able to do the work on the tennis court fence as
originally planned last Saturday, members of the YV community enjoyed a
crisp winter morning and made amazing progress in the new Community Garden
area moving debris left over from the Citi clean up day to a huge green
waste recycling container provided by Concord Disposal. Slash piles of
cut shrubs, branches, weeds and leaves disappeared fast as students working
together filled and emptied wheelbarrows as fast as they could. Another
group of students, parents and adminstrators continued to work on clearing a
larger area destined for raised beds. We worked until the container was
full-- and even finished early leaving just enough time to run and get an
ice cream reward!
The Community Garden is being developed by Student Services Coordinator, Mr.
Kevin W. Edwards and will "belong" to members of the YV community. If you
have an interest in working on the garden, helping to make raised beds,
designing irrigation, etc. please contact Mr. Edwards 685-8414 x3602.
Thank you everyone for joining us! We had a great time. and will probably
need ONE MORE big clean up to remove the remaining bushes before the raised
beds can go in. stay tuned for more information!

YVHS Community Action Group November Update!
Clean Up, Clean Up—everybody do your share!
We’ve been busy since the start of school! We have already had two major campus clean up days, the first just prior to the start of classes to help get the campus ready after a long summer and lots of construction. Twenty volunteers including parents and students responded to a last minute call for help to remove trash from all areas of campus, wash down corridors and entryways, wash windows and walls and—for the first time in nearly ten years, remove trash and broken glass from the school driveway and parking lot with a commercial street sweeper. We owe special thanks to school board president, Gary Eberhard, Concord city mayor, Mark Peterson and YVHS parent, Don Morrison for their collaborative efforts to make this HUGE job happen! Responding to our requests for necessary campus repairs, the MDUSD Mobile Maintenance Team set up shop for three weeks in October and did a variety of repair work in classrooms and around campus, including removal of dead trees. We are still reviewing the list of items that were to be completed, and will summarize them for you in a future update.
Our most recent campus clean up was sponsored by Citi celebrating their Global Community Day (click here for more info & pictures). Nearly 100 volunteers came together on Saturday, November 17th to make a difference at YV. In addition to Citi employees from all over the East Bay, the YVHS community had strong representation from administrators, teachers, parents, alumni, neighbors and nearly 45 YVHS students! It was inspiring to see so many people come out to show their support for the school. We would especially like to thank Citi for providing cleaning supplies and a delicious catered breakfast and lunch from Sunrise Bistro for the volunteers. Within a few hours, an area was cleared of bushes and branches for the new YVHS Community Garden (near the play structure), nearly a hundred (!) bags of garbage and leaf waste were removed from the driveway and parking lot, tennis courts were cleaned up and we got a start on removing broken slats and dead vines from the fencing, garbage was removed from the field and blacktop, the baseball practice field was cleared of weeds and leveled, gum was removed from the cement in front of the MU, and entryways, windows and walls were cleaned. What a difference a day makes! Thank you again, Citi!
The combined efforts of students, school administrators, district officials,
volunteers and our YV neighbors are a great first step in realizing the full
potential of Ygnacio Valley High School!
As our school district contemplates
hard budget decisions this year, reduction in custodial, landscaping and
mobile maintenance positions are expected. The work of the YV Community
Action Group and our community partners in direct support of our schools is
more important than ever. Thank you for your help! Feeling good about where you are is the first step in feeling good
about what you do there!
